MeGa-stoRE Methane Gas Storage of RE

MeGA-stoRE is a Power-to-Gas concept for producing methane from CO2. By operating on electricity, the system enables storage of considerable amounts of RE-resources from the electricity grid as methane gas. The concept has the potential to fully exploit the carbon resource in biogas and upgrade biogas to a quality similar to natural gas.
Project description
The future integration of large amount of RE in the electricity grid implies substantial challenges on balancing the production with the consumption, therefore developing storage capacity for electricity will be imperative. Furthermore, bioenergy is in the future expected to replace fossil fuels at the power plants and to be the main back-up for wind power. As drain on the world's bio sources will increase dramatically over the next decade to meet the demand for food and energy, it is crucial to find ways of using these sources efficiently. The purpose of the MeGa-stoRE project is to provide technical proof of concept of a Power-to-Gas (P2G) technology, which will store power by upgrading biogas and fully utilize the CO2 content to produce methane in a quality similar to natural gas. This technology contains two important leaps forward. First, a ground breaking gas cleaning process which will clean the gas for all impurities from 20,000 ppm to a level of ppb. Secondly, an optimized Sabatier reactor based on a more simple and economic construction than currently available Sabatier reactors. The technology can be extended from biogas to any application that produces and captures CO2.
