Development of PEM FC Stack Test Procedures

Proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells will play a significant role in the energy systems of the future. The technology is in the process of being introduced into a number of early markets. The Stack-Test project will develop industry-wide harmonized test procedures for PEM stacks and is part of a larger European project.
Project description
Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEM FC's) will play a significant role in the energy systems of the future. The technology is in the process of being introduced into a number of early markets. Several stakeholders representing the entire value chain from component suppliers over stack integrators to system integrators and end users are engaged in this process. Consistent and comparable data are required to take proper technical and commercial decisions. The purpose of the Stack-Test project is to develop industry-wide harmonized test procedures for PEM FC stacks. The project will close the present gap between cell level testing and system level testing by establishing uniform test categories and generic test modules for testing performance, durability, environmental impact and safety of PEM FC stacks. As the test procedures are developed for stationary, portable and transportation applications, it will be highly relevant both for the Danish PEM FC industry and the Danish society, as the technology can help balance the electricity grid and be part of the larger energy system. Harmonized test procedures are essential for the commercialization of PEM FC products in large scale. The project is part of a European project.
