Non Energy Benefits - 2

The project is about valuing non energy benefits of energy-saving projects. For example, in the form of better comfort, increased productivity or better quality which often are neglected or nonmonetized factors. Making non energy benefits visible increases the probability that the decision maker evaluates energy-saving project as attractive to implement.

In this ELFORSK project, “Energy efficiency is more than energy - 2 (NEB2)”, the method is further developed by including the experience from more than 100 energy efficiency projects from different segments of businesses, public institutions and housings.
Project description

The 2012-2013 ELFORSK project ”Energy-saving is more than energy – Non Energy Benefits” (in the following: ”NEB 1”), has developed a method that values non energy benefits in energysaving projects. NEBs the agronym for all the benefits conected to energy savings such as better comfort, increased productivity, better qaulity etc., witch are typically neglected or not-valued factors in calculating the profitability of the project. Making the non energy benefits visible increases the probability that the decision maker evaluates energy-saving projects as attractive to implement. There can also be hidden drawbacks, but valuing and visibility might contribute to change the project. The NEB 1 project was initial: the goal was to develop and validate a suitable method and develop a web-based tool collecting NEB 1 data. The method is developed and the web-based tool is ready for all the energy-saving-project data. The content of the NEB 2 project is focused around 1) Further development of the tool 2) Costumization – testing and adjustment 3) Dissemination and communication – work shops and road trips.

Results

In this ELFORSK project, “Energy efficiency is more than energy - 2 (NEB2)”, the method is further developed by including the experience from more than 100 energy efficiency projects from different segments of businesses, public institutions and housings. The aim is to create a simple way to illustrate the value of NEBs and thus the real payback time for energy saving projects rather than focusing solely on energy savings thereby providing professional decision-makers a better foundation for implementing energy efficiency projects.

Energy advisors and consultants have been involved in the collection of data in order to test different approaches to customers and to increase awareness of the tool. Similarly, different types of energy efficiency projects have been included to achieve greater diversity. The selected method and interview guide have been tested on different employees in order to determine which employee type that has the most knowledge of side effects.

The web tool developed in the project is anchored at the Danish Technological Institute.
