Whole-roof solutions for building integration of photovoltaics

The aim is to develop a holistic solution for the integration of solar cells in the roof, which meets all demands for the roof structure as a whole, acts as the building envelope and is designed to maximize the performance of the photovoltaics under all climatic conditions and prepared for export.

Project description

The development of integrated and high-performance solar cell systems has been on the agenda since the first facilities were installed on the roofs. However, the development of systems has been very slow and resulted in many unresolved issues concerning constructional demands, architectural quality and profitability.
The project seeks to break with the conventional approach to building integrated solar cells by developing a holistic solution that meets all demands for the roof structure as a whole.
The solution is designed for pitched roofs and will constitute the complete building envelope including all additional requirements for the roof as a whole. The solution is modular with an inherent possibility to configure it according to size, visual expression and other functional requirements. The system is based on standard components from the solar cell and glass façade industry making the unique combination of components the cornerstone of the design.
The primary market segment for the product is initially multi-family houses facing a replacement of the roof, which is exposed to an amount of insolation that yields a sufficient energy potential. Within the project a robust, well-documented and thoroughly tested prototype of the entire solution including electrical concepts will be developed.
