Gyro electric energy converter unit for wave energy

The objective of the project is to develop a gyro electric converter unit for wave energy, and to test experimentally a 5 kW unit under realistic conditions.

Project description

The objective of the project is to develop a gyro electric converter unit for wave energy. To demonstrate the technology under realistic conditions, a series of experimental test will be conducted, at the Nissum Bredning test station, on a 5 kW unit.
The following main activities will be undertaken:

  • Continue the test on the existing prototype at AAU wave test lab. Covering the determination of the absorbed power for the standard wave states. And test with irregular waves for to optimize the energy absorbed in near real conditions.
  • Design and manufacture of a 5 kW PTO unit. In the design and the choice of production methods it will be focused on the use of standard components and manufacturing methods that also can be used in the production of full scale PTO devices (15, 30 and 50 kW).
  • Test and demonstration of a 5 kW PTO unit at Nissum Bredning test station. Over a period of approx. 10 months from August 2015 til July 2016 there will be carried out a series of tests with the PTO unit attached to the test station platform approx. 140 m from the shore.
  • Configuration of a measurement program and data processing for the tests at AAU and Nissum Bredning test station.
