PV BALCONY FENCE – a highly esthetic cost efficient PV integrated balcony

The project aims to develop and demonstrate a PV-panel which will both work as a balcony fence and at the same time produce energy to the electricity grid. The PV-panel will be building integrated, be constructed with a uniform color to the extend its possible, and have a mechanical strength complying with safety norms and rules in Denmark.

Project description
Within this project the purpose is to develop and demonstrate a structural glass fence containing build in solar cells for application as balcony fences on apartment buildings. The product is targeted both renovation projects and new buildings. The product will have a marginal installation price of 1 €/Wp, and esthetics and simplicity of installation will be main objectives, making it the
architects favorite. The solar cells on the balcony fence have in general a suboptimal position and orientation, where it is to be expected that the light will hit the solar panels unevenly for extended time periods and direct sunlight will hit the panels in large angles.
The development of the product is divided into 5 subtasks.
1. Development of optimal stringing and cabling
2. Development of an attractive design with smart and durable encapsulation
3. Investigation of optimal light coupling system
4. Strength of system
5. Demonstrator
The product will be attractive to use for both renovation of and building of new apartment buildings. The marketing will target architects and building consultants whom will worship the product as a simple esthetic component which helps to comply with the Danish Energy class 2020 and beyond.
