Domestic ventilation package for Building Class 2020 – Energy renovation and new buildings

Housing listed as Building Class 2020 sets strict requirements for the ventilation system, as the building envelope becomes significantly tighter, and due to specific requirements for the thermal indoor climate during summer. Furthermore, in connection with renovation tasks, it is problematic to install large ventilation ducts inside the building. This project solves both of these problems. As an added bonus, the air quality in loaded rooms is improved.

The project has develop a cost-effective energy-efficient residential ventilation system according to a new concept that ensures fulfillment of requirements in BR2015 Low energy class 2020, focus is renovation and new construction of single-family houses.

Project description

The project develops a complete ventilation solution for housing. The focus is specifically targeting a transparent and simple solution.

The project includes the following:

  1. Design and development of an air distribution manifold handling all types of installations in ceilings. The manifold will be produced cost effective and with high quality. The installation must be safe and easy to carry out.
  2. Design of a standard automatic basic solution with e.g. module options. The basic solution controls the humidity regulation and CO2. Options can be a safeguard against excess temperatures in living rooms.
  3. Complete controlled laboratory test and the possibility of minor corrections of errors.
  4. Demonstration in single-family housing (standard house).
  5. Preparation of the basic text of "Den lille blå om energieffektiv BR2020 boligventilation – Installation, drift og service"
  6. Reporting.

The system is designed ensuring that the installation includes a minimal risk of failure. In the future, there might be a greater tendency to break down craft barriers and it is likely that ventilation systems will be installed by trade groups other than ventilation companies. Installation of ventilation systems, unfortunately, does not require authorization, as is the case with e.g. the installation of gas furnaces, DHW or electrical installations.

After project completion, Lindab and LS Control have a complete and proven solution for the production of a complete and robust BR2020 ventilation system including control, which in a simple way can be integrated into the building being energy renovated. The entire concept is compiled to be used in courses on residential ventilation, and in terms of basic text for "Den lille blå om energieffektiv BR2020 boligventilation – Installation, drift og service".

Results

The project will develop a cost-effective energy-efficient residential ventilation system according to a new concept that ensures fulfillment of requirements in BR2015 Low energy class 2020, focus is renovation and new construction of single-family houses.

The overall concept includes demand control ventilation (DCV) according to CO2 and moisture concentration for the whole house and internal movement ("loan") of air from living room to bedroom when needed (this is also referred to as "leverage" of the same outdoor air flow level). Consequently, in the bedroom there is also a CO2 sensor.

Home ventilation systems in single-family houses with flex pipes can be more efficient than traditional systems, both in terms of indoor climate and energy consumption. The construction price itself can become more competitive, as the establishment of flex pipes is less labor-intensive, provides more degrees of freedom than the use of large central steel ducts.

All in all, results have been achieved that further match requirements and degrees of freedom in the latest edition of the BR 2018 Low-energy class regulations, where, among other things, demand control ventilation (DCV) is now permitted, ie an outdoor air change in the event of personal absence as low as 0.15 liter/(s·m2 ) heated floor area.

The results of the project also dispel the myth that semi-flexible plastic pipes cannot be used due to the "large" pressure drop. However, it can be recommended to use only ø76mm dimension.

The further use of the project results can apply to all ventilation companies that design and install ventilation systems in detached houses.
