Energy Efficient 50+’ere

Energi- og Miljøcenter, Nordjylland
Residential energy consumption for heating, hot water heating and cooling account for about 40% of the total Danish energy consumption. The potential for energy savings is large, and it is therefore interesting to analyze whether there are particular specific groups that can be put into campaigns against. In this pilot project will focus be on analyzing barriers and opportunities to implement energy saving homeowners aged 50 +, as this group is known (from other studies) to have the means to energy renovate their homes.
The conclusion must be, that we don't know how much home owners will react on different information on energy savings. The results shows that most home owners implements energy refurbishment initiatives when they have to do large or smaller maintenance of the home.
Project description
The project is a pilot project which , through analysis should provide indications of how the potential size of energysavings the target group 50+ represents (in their homes ), and how much of this potential can be realized. The analyzes in the project will indicate which savings activities and investment sizes, target group has the will to implement. The analyzes must contribute to concrete suggestions on how to reach the specific audience , and how a communication to the target group might look like.
Results

50 % of the participants will invest up to 50,000 DKK in their home. By already implemented energy refurbishment initiaves focus have not been on the payback time. Up to 46 % answers, that the payback time didn't have any impact on their decision.

An important conclusion is that in general home owners don't have any knowledge about their energy consumption - how big it is and how much they pay. 45-50 % (electricity, water and heat) means that their consumption is average compared with others. Almost 30 % means that it is under average. The analysis of the results from the 44 energy reviews paired with the same home owners answers of the questionaire shows differences between home owners knowledge and facts from the energy reviews. The results shows that home owners have problems with understanding their energy bills and don't know the difference between kWh, m3 and fees for cables etc. It means they don't have any ideas of energy savings possibilities and what can be implemented in their home.

It is also important that almost 70 % of the home owners would like to have a neutral energy advisor to make a energy review of their homes, but only a small amount will pay for this service.

From these results ait must be concluded, that we don't know how much the home owners will react on differenc information and signals about energy savings initiatives. The results shows that the main part of the owners, that refurbish, only do it because the have to make large og smaller maintenance of their home.
