Weptos Offshore #1
This project aims at testing the Weptos WEC for the first time in an uncontrolled - real sea environment. This will give the opportunity to check the extensive findings from the previous investigations (based on model tests and subsequent analyses). It will operate as an autonomous system, and produce power to the grid.
Project description
Behind this application is more than 6 years of intensive R&D in close cooperation with Aalborg University, which have included several laboratory tests and basic design for a complete Wave Energy Converter. These test results have been extremely convincing and shown an efficiency of Weptos WEC which is far above what else has been seen until now within wave energy technology. One of the core principals in Weptos Technology is the design of the Power Take Off (PTO) which means that the oscillatory motion from the waves is simply converted into a continuously rotating axle, - without the use of energy consuming hydraulic system. This makes use of a standard generator system (like for wind turbines) usable. Wave Energy can contribute significantly to the Danish renewable energy mix and security of supply, as its potential has been assessed to provide 15 % of the Danish electricity consumption. The aim of this project is to pave the way for constructing the first Weptos WEC, which can be deployed in Danish waters. In a long term perspective, the plan is to build MW full-scale WECs and the Weptos technology can form basis for a significant contribution to the Danish energy production.
