Bio Corrosion Management

The project will evaluate the influence of materials microstructure on biomass corrosion in CHP plants. Models of biomass corrosion related to fuel, material and environment will be developed. Results will enable improved management of corrosion in existing biomass fired plants, leading to lower maintenance costs and better plant availability.
Project description
In collaboration between DTU Mechanical Engineering and DONG Energy, effects of the microstructure of stainless steels on corrosion in biomass combustion will be evaluated and modeled by laboratory experiements in a ph.d. project at DTU. This will enable optimum selection of superheater materials for existing CHP plants and new constructions. Risk for accelerated corrosion during long-term operation (>20.000 hours) with such materials will be evaluated.Samples will be taken from running biomass fired plants and the corrosion mechanism will investigated by detailed electron microscopy. A database of biomass corrosion will be developed and form the foundation for development of empirical or semi-empirical models of corrosion rate as a function of fuel, material and corrosive environment.Results will be used for life assessment of corrosion affected components at CHP plants. This will enable improved management of corrosion problems including better planning of inspections and replacements,. Further, it will lead to better plant availability due to fewer unforeseen plant outages caused by corrosion.The project will form the nucleus for the establishment of a corrosion network at DTU of biomass plant operators.
