RGB LED lighting in building constructions

The project will develop a smart LED lighting solution, where the LEDs are built directly into e.g. walls or ceilings. The LEDs will be controlled individually or in groups by a central control unit, able to adjust colour, luminosity and on/off. The solution will be energy-efficient, with long lasting LEDs and a minimum of maintenance.

Project description

LED iBond combines standard LEDs with a standardised composite plate consisting of two layers of aluminium surrounding a layer of electrically isolating plastic (PE). The LEDs and the composite plate is combined via a mechanical socket, which bring advantages regarding optimised heat diversion, a mechanically stable construction, great flexibility in design and low cost of the LED solution. The current solution is only available with shades of white light, and this is not enough to accommodate market needs, so it is essential to develop a smart RGB solution where an infinite number of LEDs can be controlled individually and centrally, thereby designing unique lighting setups in large areas.

The goal is LEDs 20-25% more energy efficient than competing solutions and lifetime > 50,000 hours, thus reducing operation costs. Compared to fluorescent lamps and low energy light bulbs this RGB LED solution will be 2-3 times better (measured in lumen/watt efficiency).

The outcome will be a highly customisable, high performing, energy optimised and intelligent RGB LED lighting system, where LEDs and other electrical components such as cameras, microphones and power supplies will communicate via a joint data network built into the composite plate.
