Geothermal pilot hole

The project ’Geothermal pilot hole’ will address CAPEX concerns by demonstrating how processes and procedures from oil&gas has merit, but technology must be developed to fit, and not be adopted from other fields. The project will look at the interaction of stakeholders and include how their fields of interest can be best served, benefiting the entire project.

Project description

The project ’geothermal pilot hole’ focussed on the development of a geothermal facility, based on geothermal reservoirs in 800 – 1800m depth, and the extraction of heat through heat pumps. The project targets utilising the project partner’s competencies in novel ways, drilling with lighter, bespoke equipment, which will reduce costs and risks for the project.

The project will, through four work packages, look at creating a template for the whole process which encompasses stakeholder requirements, as well as streamlining procedures for sequential projects. With a look to the process, the design process of the well system must be reviewed, keeping the production of geothermal water as the focal point. Drilling systems and techniques will be thoroughly reviewed to select best-practice systems aimed at geothermal operations, and not adapted systems from other fields.

The project aim at moving geothermal energy from being a niche energy type to becoming an RE (Renewable Energy) type in its own right. The project will demonstrate how to convert risk and uncertainty to knowledge through proper planning and execution in the field done right.
