Oxy-fired Biomass Gasification for Flexible Power

Energy Conversion and Storage
Energy from biomass will be indispensable for a Danish energy system based on 100 % renewables. This project will provide solutions to use the available biomass most efficiently with a high flexibility. Using biomass gasifiers with integrated oxygen transport membranes will provide cheap peak power and sustainable transport fuel for the future.
Project description
Energy from biomass will be indispensable for a Danish energy system based on 100 % renewables. But the amount available will be limited making it a valuable resource in the future. This project will provide solutions to use the available biomass most efficiently with a high flexibility. The here suggested concept of next generation biomass gasifiers with integrated oxygen transport membranes have the potential to significantly contribute to the vison of a fossil free Denmark in 2050 by providing and a) cheap peak power and b) sustainable transport fuel. The underlying idea in this project is to use oxygen instead of air in the gasification process. This will allow a) the use of highly efficient gas turbines for electricity generation and b) upgrading the syngas to synthetic fuel. The outcomes of this project will be the foundation which will allow the construction of a demonstration plant with an integrated oxygen transport membrane module in planned future follow-up projects. The consortium in this project consists of two research departments, DTU Energy and DTU Chemical Engineering, and three industrial partners, CoorsTek Membrane Sciences , Danish Fluid Bed Technology ApS and HMN Naturgas I/S.
