PolyGas - POLYgeneration by thermal GASification

The aim of this project is to develop the technical foundation for a polygeneration plant based on LT-CFB gasification and zeolite tar-reforming. The system co-produce electricity, heat, bio-oil and ash fertilizer from a wide range of biomass- and waste resources. Proof-of-concept operation and optimization modeling is part of the project.
Project description
The project investigates the technological feasibility and thermodynamic potential of a simple biomass based polygeneration plant developed by adding cutting-edge gas treatment to existing thermal pyrolysis and gasification platforms. The developed system is very efficient and flexible and co-produce heat, power, bio-oil and bio-ashes from a wide range of low-value biomass and waste fuels. The development of the plant is based on the Low Temperature Circulating Fluid Bed gasifier, a hot-gas particle filter, a catalytic tar-reformer, an oil-collection unit and a gas combustion engine. The zeolite based tar reformer facilitates the production of bio-oil with relatively low oxygen content, that can be used as a feed for gasoline and diesel production in conventional oil refineries and thereby provide renewable transportation fuel. Particle and tar removal is expected to result in a residual gas that can be used for gas engine operation or even synthesis of high value fuels or chemicals. The quality of the produced bio-ash is examined to determine its value as a fertilizer and soil enhancer. Proof-of-concept operation and full system optimization and integration by thermodynamic modelling is part of the project.
