SYNERGY by INTEGRATION of BIOGAS and BIO-SNG

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the synergies between biogas production, thermal gasification of biomass and gas upgrading to natural gas quality with injection on the natural gas grid.

Project description

The purpose of the project is to demonstrate the synergies between biogas production, thermal gasification and gas upgrading with injection to the natural gas grid. The mass and energy streams of the integrated gas production and upgrading process will be analysed and optimised for various configurations. The small scale indirect gasification ‘Sublimator’ technology by Frichs A/S will be further developed and adapted for bio-SNG production by including a methanation unit. In addition to the methanation step, an important development goal is to reduce the manure dewatering requirements by enabling operation with steam as gasification medium. A pilot demonstrator will be constructed, commissioned and operated at Madsen Bioenergy I/S with gas upgrade and injection to the grid. Various operating conditions will be tested and documented.

The project consists of the following work packages:

WP0: Administration and project management (DGC)

WP1: Mass and energy balances of the integrated biogas-bioSNG process (DGC)

WP2: Development of allothermal gasifier with in-situ methanation (DGC, Frichs)

WP3: Demonstrate integrated biogas-bioSNG process (Frichs, DGC, Madsen BioEnergy, HMN)

WP4: Commercialization and dissemination of the technology (Frichs, DGC)

The primary target group will be existing biogas producers who aim at expanding their business in delivering Green Gas to the natural gas grid by increasing the energy efficiency of the plant
