Pilot installation Hybrid Solar Collectors in District Heating Plants

The aim of this project is to develop and test a new concept for thermal solar collectors in a solar district heating plant and verify the benefits of the new type of solar collectors.

The new hybrid collectors, which can be operated at differential temperatures between 60K - 160K fits very well the need for collerctors in the district heating sector, as the possibility to have solar heating plants to operate at higher temperatures enables the district heating utility companies to have a higher procent of total supply of energy coming from solar heating plants. The higher temperature level also brings benefits related to better oppotunities for storage of energy and the possibility to supply energy into the high tempeture lines of the district heating system for a longer period of the year.

The target of the project is to demonstrate and validate that the hybrid collectors are competitive solar collectors enabling the district heating utilities to increse the percentage of energy supplied form solar heating plants significantly, and these plants having a low complexity, high robustness and long lifetime.

Project description

The purpose of this project is ti demonstrate preformance and prove the sompetitiveness of new hybrid collectors in a pilot plant connected to an existing solar sidtrict heating plant.

The new collectors, a hybrid of multi-parabolic CSP refelctors and flat panels, are robust, simple to install and bring limited maintenance similar to plat plate collectors, however enables higher efficiencies at higher temperatures as the CSP solutions.

The design of the hybrid collector will be frozen according to the specific criteria of the district heating plant, where the test site will be established, and to comply with known standards. Futhermore, the proposed design of the collector will be elaborated and analyzed by DTU to secure the best performance.

The project participants will set up a 100kW test facility where the real life performance ect. of the hybrid collectors will be monitores and evaluated.
