Housing 2020 with low energy consumption and high user comfort

The objective is to develop and demonstrate a new generation of low energy  housing that fulfills the coming 2020 regulations with Near Zero Energy Consumption, and where solutions are presented to those problems that have been seen so far with super low energy housing. These problems are a poor indoor climate, high summer temperatures and an energy consumption much higher than predicted.

Project description

The building envelope will be optimized to reduce unwanted passive solar gains. Windows to the east and north will have priority, and windows to the south and west will have automatic exterior shading. Three pane windows with high light transmittance and low solar heat gain will be used, having a U-value around 0.8 W/m2K

The counterflow heat recuperation ventilation system will be demand controlled, so that inlet of fresh air follows the occupants. Exhaust air from the wet rooms is controlled according to the humidity content. When a windows or a door in a room is opened, heating and ventilation will automatically be cut off.

A small 3kW ground source heat pump with variable speed drive will be installed for space heating, allowing the output to be modulated to fit the small low heat loads, and thereby increasing the COP to around 5. Hot water is produced using a separate heat pump regaining heat from the exhaust air after the heat recuperation system.

Selected bedrooms can be cooled down on summer evenings by utilizing cooling generated from the hot water heat pump.

Two demonstration houses will be built and extensively monitored for energy performance, indoor climate and user feedback.
