Stretching wind turbine rotors using optimization

Afdeling for vindenergi
A close collaboration between LM Wind Power and DTU aims to demonstrate a business case and map risks of new load alleviating blade technologies combined with multi-disciplinary optimization. A larger rotor is designed for a 3 MW wind turbine to increase its energy yield by 3% while the loads on the remaining components are not exceeded.
Project description
Through a close collaboration between LM Wind Power (LM) and DTU Wind Energy (DTU) it is our goal to demonstrate the business case and mitigate the risks of implementing new passive load reducing blade technologies together with multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) for fast and low risk design of wind turbine blades for lower Cost of Energy. A business case will be developed by designing a larger rotor for a 3 MW platform, targeting a 3% higher annual energy production (AEP) compared to the current state of the art 58.7m GloBlade3 family blade while maintaining the load envelope of the platform. The expected outcome will be a strong business case with minimised risks for LM to engage with a selected customer to pursue a demonstration project with a full scale test.
