IEA Bioenergy Task 43 - international collaboration on biomasse for energy

Sektion for Skov, Natur og Biomasse, Institut for Geovidenskab og Naturforvaltning (IGN)

The project aims at identifying opportunities for increased biomass production for energy and biobased
products, and examining how climate benefits and biomass sustainability can best be
ensured. Aims are addressed through collaboration with leading biomass exporting and importing
countries in the research network ‘Task 43 Biomass Feedstocks for Energy Markets’ under
International Energy Agency.

Project description

Project objectives are to identify opportunities for increased biomass production for energy, transportation biofuels and bio-based products, and examine how climate benefits and biomass sustainability can best be ensured. The objectives will be achieved through Danish participation in the research network ‘Task 43 Biomass Feedstocks for Energy Markets’ under the International Energy Agency (IEA) Bioenergy, including its planned activities 2016-2018. Focus will be on the Danish biomass supply in an international context. The work is divided into four work-packages (WP). WP1 analyses synergies and tradeoffs among biomass production and other ecosystems services in different land and biomass end-use scenarios. WP2 focuses on improving estimates of biomass potentials, increased biomass production and delivery of the biomass quality that any time matches the market demands. WP3 focuses on the efficiency and effectiveness of governance measures to ensure biomass sustainability, including how the verification approach affects the involved costs and achievement of sustainability goals. WP3 additionally compares climate benefits of different biomass resources, improves methods and data for calculation of greenhouse gas balances, and examine which indicators that best underpin policy goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project also includes comprehensive national and international publication and dissemination of the results (WP4).
