Full scale demonstration of an active flap system for wind turbines
The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate the system integration, the functioning, the performance and the value of an active flap system by full scale turbine tests. A further objective is to establish a detailed risk assessment of the system and a well described business case for the application of the system.
The overall objective of the project is to demonstrate the system integration, the functioning, the
performance and the value of an active flap system on a full scale turbine. A further objective is to
establish a detailed risk assessment and business case for the application of the system.
The project work is organized in five work packages. In WP1 “System integration” several active
flap systems will be explored by numerical simulations, organized in WP2 “Simulation” and
simple laboratory experiments. Risk assessment/reduction for the different explored systems will
be provided from the DFMEA/PFMEA/risk assessment analyses in WP5 “Project management
and design product analysis”. Further a business case for each explored flap system will be
provided from WP5. The outcome from WP1 will be one or two selected active flap systems with
the best business case and low risk. In WP3 “Concept validation” the selected systems will be
validated in much more details than in WP1. Also the risk reduction analysis results from WP5 will
be part of the validation. In WP4 “Full system design” one active flap system will be selected and
designed for implementation and demonstration on a full-scale Siemens turbine. Testing will be
conducted and overall outcome of the project will be an active flap system with a technology level
which makes it feasible for using at a commercial level.
