Frederikshavn Offshore Demonstrater
The project objective is to drive the novel foundation, known as the Mono Bucket, to full commercial readiness and contribute significantly to reducing costs of offshore wind energy by 30-40%. This project will conduct full scale design and installation of the Mono Bucket with a wind turbine (WTG) on top and advance TRL from TRL5 to TRL7.
The Frederikshavn Offshore Demonstration is a demo site east of Frederikshavn, Denmark, for which Universal Foundation (UF) and partners will demonstrate new technologies for offshore foundations. The offshore foundation to be demonstrated is the Mono Bucket (MB); next generation novel foundation concept for offshore wind farms. The project will conduct full scale design and installation of the MB with WTG, including demonstration of the innovative MB Design Configuration and Integrated Design Model prepared by UF, bringing the MB ready for commercialization by advancing to TRL7.
The project addresses in particular the industry target of cost reduction up to 40% (2020) and the need for new technology to move to deeper water (25-55 meters), further from shore (+ 150 km) and with bigger turbines (+ 6 MW), aiming to demonstrate a significant delivery of CAPEX reduction for foundations and a correspondingly significant impact on LCoE.
The project further seeks to demonstrate the MB´s unique ability to install a foundation and a turbine in the same installation run; hence have the possibility to generate first power within weeks instead of today´s industry standard of ½ -1 ½ years.
Finally, the project will demonstrate new products and solutions aimed at cutting O&M costs in relation to corrosion and scour protection.
