Ultra Low Temperature District Heating in New Built Areas

Demonstration of ultra-low temperature district heating in a new build area of family houses. The supply temperature all year round will be 35-40 degrees.

The investment costs in the distribution network is expected to be reduced by deployment of plastic pipes instead of steel pipes.

A lot of system benefits from the production side is achieved ex. net losses, production efficiency, utilization of renewable energy source and low temperature excess heat.

Project description

The current project intends to demonstrate Ultra-Low Temperature District Heating (ULTDH) in a new build area of family houses with floor heating hereby allowing ultra-low forward temperature all year round (35-40 degrees). Low system temperatures throughout the year would make it possible to demonstrate and show the full advantages of ULTDH.

The project will also include DH piping in PEX instead of steel and thus suggest ways of optimizing investments in the network.

The project is based on a concept that was developed and tested in two previous demonstration projects supported by the Danish Energy Agency. Domestic hot water is produced via micro heat pump, a small accumulator tank and the primary side and an instantaneous heat exchanger.

The low forward and return temperatures of ULTDH hold a number of advantages in comparison with traditional DH, including:

  • Decreased heat losses in the DH network,

  • Low temperature Resources as solar and geothermal heating can be integrated more efficiently,

  • Low temperature excess heat can utilized more efficiently,

  • ULTDH can be distributed from the existing traditional DH network´s return water resulting in increased capacity of the existing DH infrastructure.

  • Higher electrical efficiency at CHP plants and better recovery of latent heat in flue gases by condensation.
