EUDP 2016 CON20 RE-Smart

Con20 RE Smart (C20) project aims to develop and demonstrate an innovative new industrial freezer design. The markets for components to industrial freezer solutions are mature and as the ICE-E project shows there is a very large potential in reducing energy consumption by using state-of-the-art components and materials. The Danish Energy Agency recently pointed out that they no longer see a great need in developing more energy-efficient components, but a much greater potential in designing entire energy-optimizing systems taking advantage of existing state-of-the-art components.

Project description

The aim of the C20 project is to develop a solution that brings state-of-the-art materials and components in use in an energy-optimized design.

The goal is to develop a solution efficient enough to deliver freezing down to -20 degrees with power supplied only from integrated solar panels, support by battery pack to handle production fluctuations, to ensure security of supply and contribute to the use of C20 in the future Smart Grid.

C20 will be more than 40% more energy efficient than industrial freezer solutions with equivalent capacity using current state-of-the-art components and materials. By preparing C20 for the future flexible power market, the C20 will be able to generate savings and even revenue that will further reduce net operating costs of an energy efficient design.

As the technology is significantly cheaper that traditional cold stores and offer the same flexibility and speed as reefer contains, but with market-leading energy efficiency, operating costs and reliability, the Con20 VE-Smart is expected to become the new market benchmark for energy and cost-optimal industrial freezer solution. Based on initial inquiries and market research, the technology is expected to achieve global market penetration within a few years after the project, with expected annual production of not less than 500 units and turnover of no less than 125 million DKK within 3 years.
