MUPOS - Multi-pollutant-sensor
The purpose of this project is to design and develop a new cheap online multi-pollutant sensor system that can be used to minimize the emissions of harmful particles and gases including tar, soot and organic compounds from small combustion units.
The idea is that tar and organic compounds can be detected with UV light whereas soot can be measured with visible light. With this idea, a small and compact sensor system can be built using LED light source. The novelty of the technology lies in the feature that allows a single sensor to measure multiple pollutants, i.e. fine particles as well as organic compounds, in a commercial stove.
The project will be conducted in close collaboration between the stove manufacture HWAM A/S, DTU Chemical Engineering, DTU Fotonik and Prevas. Prototype sensors for the wood stoves will be built and implemented in control systems, and the new type of sensor will be carefully tested and validated before it can be brought to the market. The main activities will be focused on development of prototypes of the new optical sensor according to specifications given by HWAM, and on testing and adapting the digital combustion control system, so that the stove works at optimal condition.
