Energy key figures for energy efficiency and energy flexibility

The energy key figures that are currently used in the vast majority of Danish industrial companies are so simple that they do not provide the opportunity to follow the energy consumption sufficiently precise. Furthermore the energy key figures are often not corrected for changes in process parameters as production volume and composition which leads to inaccurate key figures.
The project has develop tools which industrial companies and energy consultants can use to generate operational key figures. Operational key figures are key figures of such quality that they can be used to identify causes to decreased energy efficiency and to document the impact of energy saving measures
Project description

The objective of project is to develop tools which industrial companies and energy consultants can use to generate operational key figures. Operational key figures are key figures of such quality that they can be used to identify causes to decreased energy efficiency and to document the impact of energy saving measures.

There is a significant need for this tool in following contexts:

  • Certified energy management according to ISO50001 can be implemented instead of an energy audit. It is required that the energy management system contains energy key figures that are precise
  • Companies and the energy consultants from the power companies have a need for the tool when they report the energy saving measures. During the last 10 years it has been possible to report energy saving measures based on energy key figures. But no specific method has been described how to account for the impact of the energy savings based on energy key figures.
  • The operation managers in industrial companies need the tool so they are able to identify energy saving options and to document the impact of the measures.

The tools will e.g. contain methods for key figure generation and correction, so they are sustainable and proposals for checklists that can be used to find causes for declining energy efficiency. Furthermore the tools will include provide suggestions on how key ratios are generated and corrected so that they become unambiguous in processes and industries. In addition, suggestions are made for diagnostic checklists that can be used to find reasons for reduced energy efficiency. Finally, methods that can be used for correction of energy key figures for processes that are part of the future flexible energy market, ie. that the calculation of the key figures takes account of the fact that the degree of process varies over time.

Results

The energy key figures that are currently used in the vast majority of Danish industrial companies are so simple that they do not provide the opportunity to follow the energy consumption sufficiently precise. Furthermore, the energy key figures are often not corrected for changes in process parameters as production volume and composition which leads to inaccurate key figures.

Therefore, the objective has been to develop tools which industrial companies and energy consultants can use to generate operational key figures. Operational key figures are key figures of such quality that they can be used to identify causes to decreased energy efficiency and to document the impact of energy saving measures.

There is a significant need for these tools in following contexts:

  • Certified energy management according to ISO50001 can be implemented instead of an energy audit. It is required that the energy management system contains energy key figures that are precise
  • Companies and the energy consultants from the power companies have a need for the tool when they report the energy saving measures. During the last 10 years it has been possible to report energy saving measures based on energy key figures. But no specific method has been described how to account for the impact of the energy savings based on energy key figures.
  • The operation managers in industrial companies need the tool so they are able to identify energy saving options and to document the impact of the measures.

The developed tools mainly contain a guide that explains how to generate and sustain operational key figures and two different computer tools for calculation of operational key figures. The computer tolls and the user manuals are in Danish but will be translated into English at a later stage.
