BiSun Boost
Bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules are rapidly gaining importance in the PV market as they can deliver a higher energy gain per area by also converting light received on the backside of the module. Bifacial modules can be manufactured at almost the same cost as ordinary modules once the production volume becomes large, so this new product offers a great opportunity to reduce the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) if all other elements of the PV system can be kept unchanged.
European Energy has established a PV test-site at the DTU Risø Campus to conduct experimental determination of the energy gain from Bifacial modules in Denmark where the diffuse sunlight is important
The test-site enable a direct comparison of different module types in several configurations, as mounting systems with fixed tilt, seasonal changed tilt, horizontal single axis, tilted axis tracking and full 2-axis tracking are installed. The gain can be further boosted by optimizing the albedo-effect from ground reflection.
The overall aim of this project is to reduce the LCOE for utility scale PV by increasing the energy harvest (by use of bifacial PV modules, reflector materials, trackers and improved tacker algorithms) while maintaining the investment at a reduced CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) through lowering the WACC (Weighted Average Cost of Capital) on the supply of convincing and validated model estimates of the energy production.Key figures
