Solid-Oxide-Cell-based Production and Use of Ammonia

Chemical Technology & Hardware Development
Demonstration of a SOEC-based ammonia synthesis gas production without an air separation unit and use of ammonia in SOFC in parallel with techno-economic studies.
Project description

The purpose of the project is to 1) demonstrate a novel process for generation of ammonia synthesis gas without an air separation unit by means of Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells as well as 2) experimentally investigate the use of ammonia as a fuel for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells. The synthesis gas generation plant will be a 50 kWel unit. The SOFC unit test will be carried out on one stack corresponding to 1.5 kWel.

In parallel, 3) design and planning of a complete industrial-sized demonstration unit for all electrified ammonia production will be performed as well as 4) socio and techno-economic studies on ammonia as an energy vector for storing excess electricity and using it for stationary power and heat production, shipping and other heavy duty transport.
