Power Buoy – Offshore solution for green marine charging
The purpose of the power buoy development program is to support the green transition of the global maritime industry by eliminating and removing CO2 pollution and particle emission caused by the maritime industry when vessels idle offshore. The ambition with our clean oceantech innovation is to remove 5.5 million tons of CO2 within 5 years after the pilot test in offshore wind farms.
Stillstrom, part of the A.P. Moller Maersk Group, is developing a buoy that will act as both a safe mooring point and a power station for idle vessels around the world.
Vessels require power while idling – to power the lights, the bridge and auxiliary applications. This power requirement is met today with fossil fuel consumption, creating significant emissions often close to congested areas of landfall. With air pollution alone causes around 400.000 premature deaths in Europe per year, this is one solution to a multi-faceted issue.
The power buoy program aims to displace the tens of thousands of tons of fuel consumed every year by idling vessels with renewable and grid electricity. Through this clean oceantech innovation program we support the green transformation of the maritime and shipping industry, and has set the ambition of removing 5.5 million tons of CO2 within five years of operation, additionally eliminating particulate matter, NOx, and SOx.
The power buoy program is in its early development phase with experimental proof of concept. Through the EUDP grant Stillstrom is able to mature the concept technology all the way into demonstration of the pilot power buoy in a commercial offshore wind farm. Following a successful pilot test demonstration, Stillstrom will commercially roll-out the solution into both into commercial offshore wind farms, and congested port areas.
