Optimization of energy efficiency of industrial insect production with special emphasis on the climate control system (EntoPower)

Life Science
The aim of EntoPower is to develop an intensive and innovative black solider fly larvae (BSFL) Heat Ventilation, Air handling and Control (HVAC) system that reduces the energy demand and ensures optimal rearing conditions. The goal is to reduce energy consumption with minimum 50% by reducing the need for ventilation, heating and cooling requirements by e.g. allowing recycling of heat from the BSFL production.
Project description
The overall purpose of EntoPower is to develop an intensive, innovative and industrial production concept for black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) production. To achieve high production efficiency, it is important to reduce the manual processes as much as possible while optimizing the growth and quality of the larvae. Previous screenings show a significant efficiency potential in heating and ventilation systems for BSFL production. In EntoPower, an innovative production concept, strongly inspired by industrial concepts for automated processes, is developed. The new heating and ventilation system aims to capitalize on this untapped energy efficiency potential and also reduces the total energy consumption in production. It is expected that the market potential of the system in Denmark will be 2-300 million DKK in 2030 - and more than DKK 2 billion DKK in the EU. In the project, a demo-scale HVAC system will be developed, which will require development within the BSLF production concept, based on optimizing cooling, humidifying and heat recovery. The goal is to reduce energy consumption by at least 50%, which will correspond to a reduction of 85-142,000 tons CO2 per year in Denmark and 1.22-2.03 million tons CO2 per year in the EU in 2030.
