Danish participation in IEA ECES Annex 37 “ Smart Design and Control of Energy Storage”
The aim of IEA ECES Annex 37 is to investigate the present situation of smart design and control strategy of energy storage systems for both demand side and supply side.
Renewable energy sources have vast potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and greenhouse
gas emissions.
There are several problems in utilization of renewable energy. Energy storage technology is one of promising solutions for these problems because it can flatten rapid changes of both renewable energy generation and demand and eliminate the mismatch between them.
Energy storage technology can be applied to both supply side and demand side. The energy system on both the supply side and the demand side is becoming more and more complex recently.
Therefore, the design process becomes increasingly more and more complex to optimize. The aim of IEA ECES Annex 37 is to investigate the present situation of smart design and control strategy of energy storage systems for both demand side and supply side. The research results will be organized as design materials and operational guidelines. Specifically, artificial intelligence that has developed signif-icantly in recent years can be expected to make a significant contribution to the smart design and control systems. This annex also covers the availability of artificial intelligence.
The Danish partners will be involved in developing prediction methods and physical modelling of components and systems (TASK A and B), in the creation of operational guidelines for smart design and control strategies (TASK C and TASK D) and in dissemination of the results.
