EUDP 2020-II Sulfur Recirculation for higher green power production and lower dioxin for-mation
Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s Sulfur Recirculation technology has been demonstrated in full-scale at Måbjerg Energy Center for two years, resulting in 40% less boiler corrosion and 70% less dioxins. An unexpected side-effect was more deposits being formed in the boiler. The objective is to understand why and how this can be avoided. DTU will perform field measurements and pilot investigations.
Babcock & Wilcox Vølund’s Sulfur Recirculation technology has been demonstrated in full-scale at Måbjerg Energy Center for two years, resulting in 40% less high temperature corrosion and 70% less dioxins as well as eliminating the need for discharging sulfate water to the environment. The decrease in high temperature corrosion rates is a key for enabling higher electrical efficiency.
Sulfur Recirculation involves separating sulfur from the flue gas in the gas cleaning scrubber and recirculate it back into the boiler, thereby increasing the sulfur concentration in the boiler. The resulting increase in sulfur concentration converts the corrosive and dioxin forming chlorides in the fly ash and boiler deposits to less problematic, sulfur rich fly ash and boiler deposits. An unexpected side-effect was more deposits being formed in the boiler.
DTU Chemical Engineering have conducted research for many years with respect to deposit formation in biomass and waste combustion plants, and will perform both advanced field measurement techniques as well as using pilot scale reactors for ash chemistry and deposit studies. The project aims at facilitating the commercialization of the technology by modifying the process in a way which limits the deposit rates while decreasing high temperature corrosion, dioxin formation and emissions.
