SOFC4Maritime
The purpose of this project is to…
1) design, build and demonstrate a high temperature fuel cell system for green fuels with an effi-ciency more than 40 % higher than state-of-the-art gensets for maritime applications 2) analyse and conclude at which production scale and size of application this new technology will be able to outcompete conventional technology
This project will address two central topics of X-to-Power for the decarbonization of the maritime sector: 1) utilization of non-fossil fuels, specifically green ammonia and 2) high efficiency conver-sion of ammonia to power on-board vessels. This will be pursued through a novel, high temperature fuel cell system with an efficiency that is >40 % higher than conventional solutions or other fuel cell system solutions.
This first demonstration will initially be on-shore in laboratory scale but designed from the start with the end-perspective of being suitable for maritime application in terms of materials, durability and in a compact design – all with the future cost in mind. Furthermore, the project will explore the full roadmap for how this technical solution will be able to outcompete conventional solutions and en-able a massive reduction of the required renewable power for the maritime decarbonization over the next 3-4 decades.
