Project Greensand Phase 1

The project aims to prove that depleted oil and gas fields in the Danish North Sea can be utilized for safe, long-term carbon storage. The project also aims to show that due to the existence of large amount of underground data and infrastructure already in place, it will be possible to mature cost-effective carbon storage sites within 4-6 years.

Project description

The project aims to prove that Paleocene-Eocene sands in depleted Danish North Sea oil and gas fields can be utilized for long-term safe CO2 storage. The project also tests the effects of ‘cyclic CO2 injection’ to emulate transport of CO2 by ship and assess the suitability of storage sites with no access to pipeline.

The main elements of the work program are:

  • Reservoir and seal suitability by lab testing of rock samples and evaluation of both their chemical and mechanical response to dynamic CO2 injection conditions
  • Assessment of the condition of existing wells for risk of CO2 leakage and proposal of abandonment practices
  • Assessment of potential to convert oil production wells into CO2 injectors
  • Assessment of the modifications to the existing off-shore facilities required to allow injection of CO2 in the underground
  • Investigation of techniques to monitor storage site integrity during and after operation
  • Public opinion assessment and communication

The results of the project will not only allow to progress the maturation of the studied field as carbon storage site, but it will also open for the potential maturation of several analogue depleted oil fields in the area.
