RockStore

The aim is to scale up and demonstrate a new technology for low-cost and flexible large-scale energy storage that allows both heat generation and power generation on demand. The energy storage can thus help to ensure that there is green power, district heating and process heat for consumers and industry on winter days without sun or wind. The project will be the basis for sub-sequent GWh energy storage projects.

Project description

In RockStore, Heliac and partners from the energy sector will demonstrate a new, efficient and flexible energy storage at Norfors' waste-fueled cogeneration powerplant. Here it will store and reuse fluctuating excess heat as district heat or electricity. In other contexts, the energy storage can replace fossil energy with fluctuating and seasonal energy sources such as concentrated solar heat, electricity from wind or, as in this project, excess heat from waste incineration.

The invention is Danish, "First of a kind" and patented.


High-efficiency heat transport, standard components, and natural materials such as stone and or-ganic oil enable an exceedingly low large-scale price of BoM (Bill of Materials) and a very scalable storage technology. This will allow the storage to support phasing in VE globally at an unprece-dented scale and without the need for subsidies.
The project develops the energy storage to the next size and as a basis for later GWh full scale energy storage projects.

Activities include design and construction of a 20-40 MWh segregated energy storage, integration into the power plant and demonstration of storage and recycling of otherwise lost high temperature fluctuation heat, here reused as district heating as well as electricity.
