Energy Efficient Access Networks
The aim of this project in broad strokes, is to address the three major contributors to ICT Access energy consumption by producing products that will motivate Operators to make quicker transitions to new technology that has much lower energy consumption. We strongly believe that Telecom Operators need to switch out twisted pair, Cable Operators their coax, and Wireless need to switch to 5G asap. There also needs to be a solution for gradual upgrade/switch over to include Operators with less financial means. Our NGPON2 E2 solution is the desired solution for Fixed Access (replacing twisted pair and coax) and provides an upgrade path for Telecom already as compatibility with GPON is part of the NGPON2 standard. Our 25Gbps SSB is an attractive interim upgrade for Cable operators. Our 25Gbps CDC is for the ultimate 5G solution for massive DWDM, yet initially Operators can install only a few channels and upgrade as needed. We believe we have the best-in-class solution in all three cases.
The objective of the project is to develop and demonstrate a novel technology for fiber-optical receivers that can increased the reach in the Access Network. This will allow operators to substantially reduce the number of central offices in their network and thereby reduce the power consumption of same. The work will be carried out by Bifrost Communications and DTU Electro through work program involving development of both electronics and opto-electronic devices based on the technology. The endresult will be three type of Receiver optical sub-assemblies. By the end of the project these will demonstrated through publications as well as to potential customers.
