IEA Bioenergy Task 37 Energy from biogas

The overall objective of the Task 37 is to communicate and advance the knowledge of anaerobic digestion systems and their application via circular economy processes, to decarbonization and environmental improvement. The work scope is to provide expert advice on the optimal role of biogas in future energy systems, to inform policy makers and developers of sustainability of biogas systems and methods to ensure application of good practice, to provide expert advice on the integration of anaerobic digestion into processes and technical support and information to policy makers and to the public. The working area covers biogas from anaerobic digestion (AD) of biomass feedstocks including agricultural residues (manure and crop residues), organic-rich waste waters, the organic fraction of municipal of solid waste (OFMSW), industrial organic wastes and energy crops.

Project description

IEA Bioenergy Task 37 is an international partnership under the International Energy Agency (www.iea.org), whose purpose is international collaboration, dissemination of knowledge and research results about biogas-based energy production, including use of biogas via circular economy processes for decarbonization and environmental improvement. The project provides expert assistance to politicians, decision-makers and developers about the role and sustainability of biogas in the future energy systems, methods to ensure the implementation of good practices, integration of biogas technologies in systems and processes. The period 2022-2024 focuses on important biogas challenges related to energy costs, acceptance of biogas technologies and to environmental sustainability. The activity is carried out as a joint project for the participating countries: Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Danish participation creates a strong international network and expertise, for the benefit of the Danish biogas sector and biogas industry. The results are disseminated via Task 37 - website www.task37.ieabioenergy.com. and the Danish website www.teknologisk.dk.
