Project Greensand Phase 2

Project Greensand Phase 2 aims to provide the necessary insight for subsequent storage capacity of 1⁄2-11⁄2 mtpa of CO2 by 2025 in the depleted Nini Field, Danish North Sea.

Project description

Denmark has with its Climate Agreement of 2020 and the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Strategy of 2021, placed CCS as the cornerstone in reaching the ambitious 2025 and 2030 CO2 Reduction Targets.

Storage of CO2 in depleted hydrocarbon field is a cost-effective option for this and can be implemented in 3-5 years. Project Greensand Phase 2 will be the first full value chain pilot project on CCS aiming to provide the necessary insight for subsequent storage capacity of 1⁄2-11⁄2 mtpa of CO2 by 2025 in the depleted Nini Field, Danish North Sea.

The project will deliver the required technical documentation and reports to prepare for a CO2 Storage Site Permit Application by 2023, qualify monitoring technologies enabling environmentally safe storage and store captured CO2. The full-scale project will be initiated in 2023, to allow for storage second half 2025. Project Greensand will move the CO2 Storage in the Nini Field from its current TRL 5 to TRL 8 in 24 months. It is a challenging an ambitious timeline, but paramount for Denmark to meet the 2030 Climate Target, as well as the 50-54% midway target.
