Data-driven best-practice for energy-efficient operation of industrial processes

SDU Center for Energy Informatics

This project aims to identify and evaluating best-practice guidelines for energy-efficient operation of industrial processes the by developing an IoT-enabled edge-computing infrastructure with en-ergy smart metering and sensors for onsite process monitoring, data collection, and validation.

Project description

In Denmark, the manufacturing and process industry accounts for 22% of the national energy use, and it is the second largest source (20.8%) of CO2e emissions. The Danish climate goals of a 70% emission reduc-tion by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050, will require the Danish manufacturing and process industry to significantly reduce CO2e emissions by 2030, and transit towards energy-efficient and climate-neutral pro-duction by 2050. For the manufacturing and process industry to successfully reduce their CO2e emissions they urgently need software tools that can provide them with actionable insights on the energy use of their daily operations. This project will deliver an IoT-Edge computing and Cloud-based software platform that allows the manufacturing and process industry to automatically collect and analyses energy consumption and production data to determine best operation practice for minimizing energy use and CO2e emissions while ensuring product quality and process throughput. The project is expected to reduce the energy use in the manufacturing and process industry by 5-10% depending on the industrial process. This corresponds to the annual consumption of 3,262 Danish households.
