250 MW wave power in the Danish North Sea by 2030 – phase 1

The purpose of this project is to implement the next phase in the Exowave strategy, which is to be able to establish a 250 MW wave power plant together with an offshore wind farm before 2030 in Danish waters. The purpose of this phase is to develop and demonstrate a wave power plant with an associated water turbine generator that must be able supply approx. 100 kWp of electricity.

Project description

The project further develops and upscales Exowave technologies that have been developed, patent-applied and demonstrated during the previous EUDP project.

The demonstration will be carried out in the North Sea off Hanstholm in the area set aside in havplan.dk for renewable energy and at approx. 14m water depth. The wave power plant must supply pressurized seawater to a water turbine generator ashore, of approx. 100 kWp.

In the project, emphasis is placed on using materials and methods which are intended to be used in mass production of Exowave cells and in very large installations. E.g., the foundation will be designed for rein-forced concrete and the wave flap will be designed for the use of fibre-reinforced plastic, where waste from e.g., wind turbine blades can be used. To ensure the lowest possible potential CAPEX, OPEX and LCOE, high safety is emphasized in the design, establishment and operation phase, installation and maintenance methods are used which require small vessels and avoid the requirement of large and expensive crane vessels.

There will be high focus on environmental impact assessment and positive interaction with the sea's fauna, fish, and wildlife (EIA). Real total impact from cradle to grave (LCA) is analysed and assessed.
