Straw-Fuel-Oil: A sustainable drop-in biofuel for the decarbonization of the marine trans-portation sector
The project will deliver the knowledge base and precise assumptions needed for Crossbridge and in the future other refineries to make investment decisions to build and operate commercial scale plants after this project is concluded with success.
Kvasir Solvent Liquefaction (SL) technology for converting biomass (lignocellulose) from unutilized agricultural residues (e.g., straw) into a high-quality drop-in maritime biofuel that can be used directly in a marine engine.
When successfully demonstrated, the Kvasir Solvent Liquefaction technology can be easily integrated into the existing infrastructure for fuel production and delivery i.e.. Ships can directly replace fossil fuels and use this biofuel with existing engines, tanks, pumps, distribution systems, etc. as when they use fossil fuels.
The project aims to scale up an already tested pilot plant (1 litre oil per hour) for the production of straw-fuel-oil from agricultural residues to a demonstration plant (50-75 litres per hour) and will include the design, construction and operation of the plant. The project also involves the validation of the straw based marine fuel on a real ship engine.
Advantages of the Kvasir approach to biofuel:
- No switching costs, the high-quality drop-in fuel requires zero engine and infrastructure adjustments.
- Cheaper than alternative biofuels. Compared to other biofuels, the oil will be up to 50% cheaper.
- Effective valorisation of 2.2 million tons unutilized straw in Denmark to a marine fuel, which will contribute up to 4.6 million ton of CO2-eq savings.
