WaveFuels

The aim of this project is to design, test, optimize and prepare for an industrial scale demonstration of microwave cracking technology, converting biomass to biofuels and biochar for carbon storage. This will contribute to the green transition by improving resource utilization and handling of organic waste materials.

Project description

The WaveFuel project will design, test, optimize, and prepare for demonstration of a new P2X technology, Microwave cracking. The technology will be prepared for industrial scale demonstration with sewage sludge as main biomass feedstock. The microwave cracking process results in biooil (transferred into biofuel with the potential of replacing fossil fuels), and biochar (biological carbon for storage and potentially soil improvement). The project will lift the technology’s TRL from 6 to 8, preparing it for final demonstration and commercial rollout.

The project consists of following work packages:

  • Project Management, administration, and dissemination
  • Optimization of the final OFT8 core design
  • Basic and detailed WaveFuels plant design
  • Upstream and downstream value chain preparation
