SkyClean Scale-up
The SkyClean Scale-Up project makes it realistic to achieve a pyrolysis-based reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the Danish agricultural sector of at least 2 million tonnes of CO2e yearly in 2030 and additionally 1.6 million tonnes CO2e yearly through displacement of fossil fuels.
The project has three overall goals: (1) mature the SkyClean technology, (2) document CO2 storage, environmental and fertilizer effects and (3) develop the surrounding value chains.
In No. 1, the first 20 MW SkyClean pyrolysis plant is being built. Construction is underway and is expected to be completed in Q1 2024. It is being built at Agri Energy's biogas plant in Vrå, from which it receives biogas residual fibers and supplies pyrolysis gas for biogas upgrading. The project is also working with pyrolysis' other possible energy products.
In no. 2, the stability of biochar in the soil is examined with calculations, chemical studies, lysimeter tests, etc. Biochar's environmental and agricultural effects are investigated in pot trials, lysimeter trials, new small-scale field trials and the continuation of existing small-scale field trials. Finally, medium-scale field trials are carried out under the auspices of SEGES Landsforsøg.
In No. 3, experience is created with handling, storage and spreading of the over 10,000 tonnes of biochar that will be produced in the project. A limited quantity will be used for experiments in the project as described above, dispersion experiments etc. The majority will be distributed on a demonstration farm and by volunteer farmers who want to gain experience with biochar themselves.
