MakeFCLast Make-FC-Last Materials and Key Processes of Fabrication towards Cost and Lifetime Adaptable Sustainable Transport

HT-PEMFC with Danish industry in the lead is on the threshold of market entry and consortium partners are committed to establish a production line of cell components at a production rate of 1-10 cells/s. Further reduction of cost and enhancement of durability and production reliability are the recognized unmet issues. This can be achieved by a low-TRL materials development effort alongside the existing high-TRL stack and system early market entry. This proposal is devoted to maturing new materials and processing techniques demonstrated in lab (TRL 2-4) aiming at scale up fabrication (TRL 5) and full commercial operation in prototype short stacks (TRL 6-7).

The targets are a single cell power density increased from by 20%, an MEA lifetime of > 10000 hours, cycling degradation rate decrease of 35% and a total Pt loading decreased with 44% from 1.8 to 1.0 mg/cm2. High-capacity production methods are introduced to lower materials cost and match requirements for reproducibility, speed and feasibility.

Solving these issues will greatly increase the performance of the HT-PEM technology and enable a cost-effective, competitive, and sustainable alternative drivetrain for vehicles and key fundamentals for a full commercial introduction of the next generation clean mobility based on HT-PEM fuel cells powered by renewable methanol. HT-PEM hybrid electric vehicles will significantly reduce greenhouse emissions from transportation while utilizing the existing infrastructure.
