NewHC New Hyperspectral Camera technology for material identification

A new epoch of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology is evolving as the technology has gained interest in the recent decade, mainly due to enhanced production methods, improved computing power, and technological development of the HSI cameras. NewHC will be first mover in implementing the latest sensor array technology and take advantage of it in relation to the Green transition by targeting the global plastic and textiles challenge. The resulting high-performance hyperspectral camera with extended spectral range from 400 nm to 1700 nm will in combination with artificial intelligence be applied in plastic and textile sorting by utilizing the unique high-resolution spatio-spectral information. The necessary complementary competences and experience within HSI are present as partners are experts in optics (University of Southern Denmark, SDU) and plastics (Aarhus University, AU) and the global industrial partner (Newtec Engineering A/S, Newtec) ensures camera development and industrial implementation. NewHC engages all the skill sets in the implementation of sensor arrays incl. the design of new optics, electronics, digitalization, etc. EU envisions Denmark to recycle ≈500k tonnes plastic waste and the HSI technology is paramount in achieving this goal. NewHC is expected to create 10-16 new jobs, a spin-out company with potential of 40M DKK, while increased recycling rates are expected to save 53-63k tonnes and 6-8M tonnes CO2 annually in Denmark and EU, respectively.
