AFLOAT Ammonia FuelLed cOmbustion for marine ApplicaTions

Ammonia (NH3) is envisioned as a key future sustainable fuel for the marine sector. NH3 is attractive for obtaining zero carbon emissions, and it can be stored as a liquid with an acceptable energy density. NH3 is also a clean energy carrier, which can be produced with renewable power in PtX processes.

In this project the consortium will develop and demonstrate a solution that improves combustion properties of NH3 by hydrogen (H2) enrichment. This mixture can then be used as fuel for 4-stroke engines and marine boilers, which are not currently able to operate on pure NH3.

The project will develop an NH3 cracking unit, which converts NH3 to H2. Onboard storage of H2 can then be avoided, which makes fuel handling and storage safer, cheaper and more efficient. The chemical cracking can utilize waste heat to increases the heating value of the fuel mix significantly. By improving the ignition and combustion properties and utilizing exhaust waste heat, the thermal efficiency in engine combustion is expected to improve as well.

The concept will be demonstrated for application in existing dual fuel engine designs. New burner technology will also be developed for boilers.

The solutions that the project offers are vital elements within the entire NH3 value chain, as stated in the Innomission 2 Roadmap and the vision is to: 1) couple producers and end users of NH3, 2) support the development of commercially available NH3 ships, and 3) increase the demand for NH3 from bunkering hubs.
