Lavenergi biofornyelige belægningsmaterialer (LOOPER)
Asphalt is mainly composed of rocks and a binder. Currently a fossil fuel-based product, bitumen, is used as binder. The purpose of this project (LOOPER) is to further develop and test a new bio-based binder, visiBIT. This is done to increase energy efficiency and reduce CO2e emissions compared to traditional production methods. LOOPER is a collaboration between Visibuilt, DTU and Munck Asfalt.
LOOPER is a collaboration between Visibuilt, DTU and Munck Asfalt. The purpose of this project is to further develop and test a new binder, visiBIT, for pavement construction.
The asphalt industry is currently dependent on bituminous binders which are fossil fuel-based. A new type of binder, visiBIT, is developed to increase energy efficiency in production and reduce CO2e emissions compared to traditional production methods. This binder uses fermentation of biomaterials from forestry and agriculture, and has been developed in the laboratory of Visibuilt in 2023. By partnering up with DTU and Munck Asfalt, the visiBIT concept will be further improved and tested, both in the lab and in field-scale tests.
The results of LOOPER will be crucial in moving the visiBIT solution further and supporting the asphalt industry in its efforts towards a net-zero future, oil independence, and energy reduction.
