Lavpris Smeltet Salt Termisk Energiopbevaring til Industriprocesser (LoCoMoSa)

LoCoMoSa aims to develop a cost-effective molten salt thermal energy storage system to supply process heat at 120-450° C. The main expected results are a medium voltage electrical heater with reduced conversion cost, a novel high power output steam generator, and molten salt thermal energy storage for medium temperature industrial processes.

Project description

Industry has been the slowest sector to move to renewable energy use, with only 13% of energy being sourced from renewables today. It is the second-largest global emitter of energy-related CO2. LoCoMoSa proposes indirect electrification using renewable energy to achieve a cost-effective molten salt thermal energy storage system to supply processes between 120° and 450° C. This will be realized by implementing a medium voltage electrical heater with significantly reduced power-to-heat conversion cost, a novel additively manufactured steam generator, and an optimized molten salt storage system (TES) adapted to local electricity prices and industrial heat demands.

The overall goal of the project is to demonstrate the novel molten salt TES on a pilot scale. The system will have a heating capacity of 150 kW, a storage capacity of approximately 150 kWh thermal and a discharge capacity of at least 50 kW. The project is structured into six work packages, including WP1 Project Management, WP2 System Design and Optimization, WP3 Electrical Heater Development, WP4 Steam Generator, WP5 System Integration and Demonstration, and WP6 Dissemination. The project involves six partners, including DTU Energy and Hyme from Denmark, FISE and CSN from Germany, and INFN and SEAM from Italy.
