IEA EGRD 2024-26

The aim of EGRD is to provide analytical support to decision-makers on new energy technologies, more specifically on R&D priority-setting, methods and approaches for evaluating impact and benefits from R&D and understanding emerging and systemic R&D topics.

Project description

The project supports the Danish participation and chair of the IEA Expert Group on R&D Priority-setting and Evaluation (EGRD). It was founded as an informal advisory group to CERT in 1994 to help their national governments on methodologies and approaches for energy technology assessment and for setting R&D priorities. These areas were of increasing concern to IEA and since 2015 analytical support to decision-makers on new energy technologies has become even more important. In short, the EGRD provides expert knowledge and advice on: i) R&D priority-setting and the linkage to governmental policy objectives; ii) Methods and approaches for evaluating impact and benefits from energy-relevant R&D; iii) Understanding of emerging and systemic R&D topics. The EGRD has successfully acted as a catalyst of emerging and cross-cutting topics relevant to the acceleration of new energy technologies and organises practitioner-researcher workshops and webinars on relevant topics. Recent topics include: Social impact of clean energy policies (2023), Decarbonized heating and cooling (2023), International cooperation for ensuring secure and sustainable critical minerals in clean energy technologies (2022), Hydrogen in the energy system decarbonization (2022). Findings and recommendations are reported in Executive summaries and presented to CERT. They are publicly available on https://userstcp.org/iea-egrd. Special outreach is made to engage with IEA TCPs with Danish participation on cross-cutting issues.
