Methods for determining wind conditions in complex terrain
This project has carried out a measurement campaign of the wind at Bolund Hill in Roskilde Fjord on the basis of preliminary CFD calculations and the use of advanced lidar remote sensing. The period covered by the lidar measurements was about 80% and these were verified with measurements by cup anemometers. The measurement data collected at Bolund is deemed to be of international quality and they will be used to validate and develop numerical tools to determine wind conditions in complex terrain for many years to come. Later on, similar measurements will be conducted in a full-scale terrain in India.
The Purpose of the project is to develop reliable methods for determination of local wind conditions in complex terrain based on remote sensing techniques in combination with advanced flow computations. I addition, a detailed measurement campaign will be carried out on a characteristic hill at Roskilde Fjord, which has several of the relevant properties that characterizes a complex terrain. These measurement data will form a basis for a detailed verification of the above-mentioned methods. Finally, the methods will be employed on an existing complex terrain provided by the participating wind turbine manufacturer. In the project the following sub-tasks will be treated: 1) Identification of characteristic flow conditions over complex terrain for reliable estimation of power production and wind turbine loads. 2) Development of Risøs Lidar for measuring wind conditions in complex terrain including determination of turbulence intensity, wind gradients on potential wind turbine placements. 3) Application and further verification of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods on an existing complex terrain with measurements provided by the participating wind turbine manufacturer and verification against detailed measurements from the measurement campaign at Roskilde Fjord
