Improved performance measurements: Characterization of the wind field over a large wind turbine rotor (IMPER)

The objectives of this project is to improve on the current practice of basing performance evaluation on a single point measurement of wind speed and instead introduce a method where the wind field measurement covering the complete rotor area is used.

Project description

The project consists of measurements and calculations made with the help of aeroelastic codes. The measurements consist of: Meteorological measurements made with the help of the two met masts; Remote sensing measurements made with the help of a LlDAR and a SODAR; Performance measurements (loads and power) of the two wind turbines, which will be made available by the manufacturers to Risoe for the needs of the project. The aeroelastic calculations take place on a Vestas and a Siemens turbine using an aeroelastic code. Using the measured wind fields for the two turbines, the response is simulated with the aeroelastic model. The simulation results are compared with the measured response in terms of the conventional hub height measurement and the proposed new one, which takes into consideration the input over the whole rotor height. As part of the modeling, a parameter study is carried out in order to illustrate the performance (power and loads) sensitivity to variations in inflow, i.e. for different shear, turbulence intensity and direction variations. The main deliverable of the project will be a new method for characterizing the performance of a wind turbine as a function of the wind and turbulence parameters over the whole rotor. An important by-product of the project is also the measurement set produced by using remote sensing, which will allow verification of the remote sensing and introduction of these techniques to the international standards
